In general I am looking for original works that are written or drawn specifically for the pages of Hermes Portal.
Written works and illustrations that appear in these pages do so under a publishing agreement to maintain the magazine's uniqueness. Unsolicited material is welcome.
Hermes Portal will pay for articles and illustrations appearing in its pages. The author will also receive a free copy of the issue his or her work appeared in.
People sending spells, questions accepted for the Dear Abelard or the Heretic's Corner columns, and so on will receive a free issue.
I am looking for anything that might be of interest to a storyguide, player, or troupe involved in Ars Magica.
Text submissions should be in English. As a general guideline, articles should be no less than 500 words. There is no upper limit, but long articles will be run in a multi-part, multi-issue format.
For game-specific terminology use the fourth edition of Ars Magica.
While your written work is always subject to editing as a condition of acceptance, well try to make as few changes as possible and to preserve your writing style.
Don't format your text as far as bold or italics go, and definitely do not write in all capitals. If you have some ideas as to how you'd like to see sidebars and other special text formatted, [put it in brackets].
E.g. indicate titles by:
[CH: title of the article]
[A: first level title]
[B: second level title]
Try to keep a clear and rational organization.
I prefer electronic submissions in txt, rtf, or doc (MS Word: IBM PC or Mac) format.
I am looking for art that helps illustrate the articles that are written for the magazine, cover art border art, etc. Im looking for artists who can work within prescribed deadlines.
If you are not going to provide the physical illustration for scanning, then you must agree to provide it electronically at a standard that will be sufficient to maintain good quality.
The preferred electronic graphics formats accepted for publication are .eps and .tif. When saving tiff files, if you have an option to save in PC format, please do so.
Information will be provided upon request.
A cash payment plus a copy of Hermes Portal that your submission appears in for featured articles, adventures, etc. The amount will be fixed later and will depend on the number of subscribers.
Editors will also be paid.
People sending spells, questions for the Dear Abelard or Heretic's Corner columns, etc. that are used will receive a free issue.
Only Hermes Portal may print the article for 9 months after its acceptance (acceptance is generally confirmed within two weeks of submission), unless the publisher and author agree, in writing, to an exception. After 9 months, Hermes Portal may continue to sell the article and may re-print it without further payment, but the author is free to publish the article in any medium.
The "9 months" is changed to "12 months" for articles published in three parts or more.
The "9 months" (or "12 months") is canceled if the work becomes part of an official Atlas' Ars Magica publication.
As a rule of thumb, your article should not have been published before you submit it to Hermes Portal.
Nonetheless, you can discuss its content with other persons, "within reasonable limits", to improve/playtest it.
